How to wash a ceramic-coated car (and what to avoid)

A ceramic coating changes how a car gets dirty and how it gets clean. Dirt sits on top of the coating instead of bonding to the paint, so most of it comes off with water alone. What it does not do is make washing optional — a coated car left dirty for months will still bond contaminants on top of the coating, and the water-beading you paid for will fade.

Here is the routine we give every customer who picks up a coated car.

The routine

• Rinse first, properly. Most of the grit comes off before anything touches the paint. Start at the roof and work down.
• Two buckets. One with your shampoo, one with clean water and a grit guard. Rinse the mitt in the clean bucket between panels. This single habit prevents most swirl marks.
• pH-neutral shampoo. Strong degreasers and traffic-film removers strip the coating’s top layer. A plain pH-neutral shampoo is all a coated car needs.
• Dry with air or a plush towel. Do not drag a towel across dry paint. A drying aid helps the towel glide.
• Wash in the shade. Water drying on hot paint leaves mineral spots, and those are what most people mistake for coating failure.

What to avoid

• Automatic brush washes. Spinning brushes put swirls into anything, coated or not. Touchless is fine occasionally, though the chemicals are harsh.
• Wax on top. It does nothing useful over a coating and can dull the hydrophobics.
• Letting bird droppings sit. A coating buys you time, not immunity. Rinse them off the same day.
• High-pressure straight at edges if the car also has PPF or a wrap — keep the lance back and off the film edges.

When beading slows down

If water stops sheeting the way it did, the coating is usually not gone — it is covered. A decontamination wash and a coating-safe topper normally brings it back. Bring it in and we will look at it rather than guess.
